There’s a movie theater space at my gym. When I first get in there, I can’t hear the movie because all I can hear is the voice in my head that says, “I don’t want to be here. I can’t do this. I’m out of shape. I’m too fat. I would rather be sleeping.”
Then I begin to hear my feet hitting the treadmill and the sound of the treadmill belt. I also become increasingly distracted by the sound of everyone else’s feet pounding around me. The beeping noises… the rhythmic thumping… the droning, indistinct sounds of the movie coming from the speaker… oh my,I can barely take it! The desire to punch someone out at the front desk if they do not turn up the volume is overwhelming. 🙂
But…if I take my focus off of all of those things and just put it on the movie and listen very attentively, eventually, the movie volume seemingly grows louder and louder. Before you know it, all I can hear is the movie. It’s hard to believe, but sometimes, I will actually forget that I am in the cardio room!
What happened? Well, when I’m really focused on a movie, it sounds loud and very clear. All my former complaints and distractions fade away.
What I’m wondering is, how can I (we) truly hear God’s guiding whispers in the midst of the busyness of our to-do lists, texting, social media posting, TV viewing, inbox checking, and children’s cries? Life can be very noisy, right?
Then there are times of discouragement -the loss of a job, an illness, a troubled relationship, you name it — any or all of these can create an unsettling clamor in our hearts and minds. It’s all we can hear sometimes!
BUT! If we will quiet our mental pace and set our focus on listening for God’s voice, eventually He will become louder than all the other things that are happening externally and internally. And then a peace from Him enters us that surpasses our human understanding. It’s His light and easy yoke.
And it’s hard to believe, but often we will actually forget that we are in the middle of hurt and chaos!
We want you to go farther in your journey of listening and following God!
