What do you own? A house and a car? Do you have a savings account, mutual fund, or Roth IRA? Do you own a business, have children, or deal in real estate?
The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
What does that mean? To me, that means that everything I have actually belongs to God, and I own nothing – I’m simply a steward (a caretaker) of everything I’ve been given. “My” money, home, children, time, and talents have been given to me so that others might be helped and God may be glorified. I think the Lord wants me to enjoy what He has provided, but I have been entrusted with all of these things with the expectation that they be used for His Kingdom. In Matthew 25:21, we read about a master who puts servants in charge of his stuff. He wasn’t happy with how all the servants responded to the responsibility he gave them. I want to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
When I worry about my family, I am taking ownership; when I don’t pray and listen to the Lord when I spend money, I’m taking ownership; when I refuse to humble myself and make amends, I’m taking ownership; and when I don’t step out in faith and use the gifts and talents Jesus has given me, I’m taking ownership.
It’s easy to say that I’m simply a steward, but it’s much more difficult for me to live it out daily. Do I really believe that all I have is the Lord’s? Do I consider Him when making decisions about family, money, and time?
I want to! Sometimes it’s a daily struggle to put God first in everything!
Just as He owns everything, I should expect Him to want a say in everything – in every decision I make. And the way to find out what He wants is to ask Him!
God also wants me to be a good steward of myself (my mind, spirit, and body). Am I taking care of myself physically, emotionally, and spiritually? Am I spending quality time with the Lord (and others) so that I’m spiritually fed? Am I saying “no” to good things so that I can say “yes” to the things that Jesus is asking me to do? Am I feeding my body with nutritious foods?
What are you stewarding well?
Is there any thing or situation in which you’ve struggled to acknowledge God’s ownership?
Ask God to reveal where you need help in living out a life that reflects this truth: He owns everything – you are His steward.
