If Words Could Kill, I’d Already be Dead

By Sheri Yates

“I am stupid.”

Every time I failed or missed the mark, I would hit myself in the head repeating the same words over and over again. At the age of 26, while tearing myself down and repeatedly chanting, “I am stupid,” I had a realization maybe I was not stupid after all. In fact, I was a CPA working for the largest public accounting firm in the world – a firm known for only hiring the best and  brightest people. This realization, coupled with the understanding of who God says I am in His word led me on a journey to healing and life.

You see, as a child, I was called  “stupid” for so long that I began to repeat it. The words  I AM are two of the most powerful words ever spoken. I was eventually branded by the phrase “I AM stupid.” That small phrase literally became who I was and how I viewed myself. The Bible says that you have the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead living inside of you! (Rom. 8:11) If that same power of Jesus lives in you, than I AM should also be two of the most powerful words you speak! The I AM statements you speak over yourself are either killing or encouraging you! You must look through God’s eyes to see who you are!

Look at what happened when Jesus himself said the words “I am”:

Then Jesus, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to them and said, Whom are you seeking? [Whom do you want?] They answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to them, I am He. Judas, who was betraying Him, was also standing with them. When Jesus said to them, I am He, they went backwards (drew back, lurched backward) and fell to the ground. John 18:4-6 AMP (emphasis added)

When you hear yourself speaking about who you are, what do you hear yourself say? Circle and/or add to the following list the labels you have used to describe  yourself within past month.

I AM:

Fat
Stupid
Loud
Helpless
Boring
Friendless
Afraid
Ugly
Worthless
Rejected
Purposeless
Awkward
Weird
Annoying
Unliked

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit – you choose. – Proverbs 18:21 MSG

So if  out of your heart the mouth speaks,  how do you stop speaking death over yourself?! Change your “stinking thinking by renewing your mind with God’s thoughts of you! Speak life over yourself by only speaking truth, and crank up the volume! Look at these powerful I AM statements. Star the statements you  struggle to believe and circle the ones you know and believe firmly. Which speaks to you the most?

This is the most meaningful and touching post I could have read today. Thanks for sharing it. I noticed you used the MSG translation. I read several versions but it is my favorite because I find it speaks to me in totally understandable words. Thanks again for sharing.
